Heaven Is for Real Book Review free essay sample

The Title of this literature is â€Å"Heaven is for real† and the author is Todd Burpo with Lynn Vincent. II) The Brupo family lives in Imperial, Nebraska. Sonja and Todd Burpo are the parents of four wonderful children. Cassie, Colton, Colby, and one daughter that passed away due to maternal complications, are the children of Sonja and Todd Burpo. While on vacation during 2003, The Burpos family visited Denver Butterfly Pavilion. It was to celebrate Todd’s recovery from a shattered leg, kidney stones, and hyperplasia (a lump in his chest). Colton falls ill to feverish symptoms and what appeared to be a â€Å"stomach virus† (uncontrollable vomiting), so the fun ended early for the Burpo family. When he is transferred to Nebraska’s Great Plains Regional Medical Center, Dr. Timothy O’Holleran diagnosed him with a ruptured appendix. He had been living with toxins in his body for five days straight as a result of the ruptured appendix. After the various operations, Colton made a remarkable recovery. The events that follow shock Colton’s parents when he reveals that he took a trip to Heaven while he was in surgery. III) â€Å"Heaven is for real† focuses on Christian faith and belief. The book addresses that Heaven is real, God is real, Jesus is real, and even Satan is real. This is done through Colton’s experience in Heaven while undergoing his surgery. The book addresses people to be strong in Christian faith and in Jesus. The Burpos family has been deeply affected by their son’s visit to Heaven. Colton’s experience gave his mother the strength to move on from her maternal complication with her daughter. Colton reassured his great grandmother that she will find Pop (Lawrence Barber, her husband) in Heaven because he did. Colton’s experience made Todd Burpo realize that he could be real with God, even through anger and God would listen, he didn’t need a religious prayer to make God listen. â€Å"We are bolder† (Todd Burpo, 153), this experience has made the Burpos family stronger; it gives them faith every day to believe in God.IV) Todd Burpo is the pastor of Crossroads Wesleyan Church in Imperial, Nebraska. His sermons are broadcasted every Sunday on the local radio. He is very much qualified to share his son’s experience because he relates Colton’s experiences to what sacred texts say about Heaven and God. Throughout the story Todd Burpo provides citati ons from sacred texts and holy books to support what Colton claims is Heaven, what is in Heaven, who is in Heaven, what the people in Heaven look like, what Jesus looks like, what god looks like, and etc. Todd Burpo however is not a publisher or writer so he needed the help of Lynn Vincent. Lyn Vincent is the New York Times best-selling writer of Same Kind of Different as Me. Lynn is the author or coauthor of nine books, worked for eleven years as a senior writer, then worked as features editor (covering politics, culture, and current events). Todd Burpo wrote this book to share his son’s experience with the world. He believes that Colton experienced something special and it should not be kept a secret, it can help people hold onto their Christian Faith and have a stronger belief in God. In his own words he says, â€Å"We live in a day and time when people question the existence of God. As a pastor, I was always comfortable talking about my faith, but now, in addition, I talk about what happened to my son. It’s the truth and I talk about it, no apologies. † (Burpo, 153). V) When the Burpos family returns home from the tragedy, they faced huge depression after seeing the medical bills and overdue monthlies. The bills left them $23,000 of debt buried deep under the ground. However, with the help of family and people who had prayed for Colton, they had been able to pay out the debt. The next event that follows is visiting Colton’s cousin (Bennett). During the way, Todd jokingly scolds Colton and asks him â€Å"Do you want to go back to the hospital? † but Colton said he did not want to go, he instead insisted them to send Cassie. When Colton’s mom had asked him if he remembered the hospital, he responded by saying â€Å"Yes, Mommy, I remember†¦ That’s where the angels sang to me. † Not taking it seriously, they thought maybe he had a dream. But Colton then goes on to say that he â€Å"went up out† of his body, â€Å"spoken with angels† (Burpo, 61), and â€Å"sat in Jesus’ lap† (Burpo, 61). Colton was even able to say where his parents were and what they were doing while the doctor was â€Å"fixing† him up. His father was in a room praying, and his mother was on the phone with family members and also praying. This definitely shocked the Burpos and it was then that they realized that something extraordinary happened to their son. This is when the Burpos itched to get more details out of him about Heaven and what he experienced. The first description about Heaven he mentioned was â€Å"rainbows. † â€Å"There’s lots of colors†¦in Heaven.. That’s where all the rainbow colors are. Todd eventually asked Colton what Jesus looked like and amazingly Colton responded by saying exactly what the question had asked. â€Å" And he has brown hair and he has hair on his face.. and his eyes†¦ oh, Dad, his eyes are so pretty! † In addition, having no knowledge about the Crucifixion of Jesus, Colton tells his father that â€Å"Jesus has markers. † He states that the markers are red and that they are located in Jesus’ palms and the tops of his feet. Colton shows this to his Daddy through physical demonstration. Colton also explains to his Dad that â€Å"Everybody has wings† in Heaven. Everybody but Jesus has wings, so when the angels are flying, Jesus is ascending. Another one of Colton’s experiences is when he met Pop, his Great Grandfather. His father finds this out because Colton asked whether if Pop was his mom’s father or his dad’s father. However, when Todd showed Colton a picture of Pop when he was old Colton had responded by being unfamiliar with the picture. He told his father that â€Å"nobody is old in heaven†¦and nobody wears glasses. † When Todd showed him a picture of Pop when he was younger and without glasses though Colton recognized him. When Colton went to Heaven, he also met his baby sister. Colton described her as being small and having dark hair like her mom. Colton said that his sister wanted everyone to know that she was okay and she was doing well, â€Å"Jesus adopted her. † This was significant for Colton’s mother because it helped her defeat her guilt for having a miscarriage and it helped her to start healing. VI) Jesus said, â€Å"unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. † I agree with this quote because it describes children as being pure. Children are honest, humble, and they live life happily doing the things they love. These attributes are â€Å"hard-wired† into children; you can’t get them to change. Children are able to accept reality and to accept things the way they are even when it is hard or strange. Think about it! From my personal experience, my brothers were the last ones to become affected by my parents’ divorce. Even though Daddy does not live with them, they understand that Daddy and Mommy cannot be together. Being the middle child I accepted it also, but it was harder for my older sister to accept it, it hurt her more than it hurt us. Up to today I believe my little brothers are unaffected by my parents’ separation and divorce. Even after Colton’s experience in Heaven, he was able to continue to do what he does best, crash superhero action figures into evil villain action figures. Though his experience shocked his parents, he thinks of it as â€Å"normal. † This quote is important to the book because it shows how Colton was able to go to Heaven and it shows that if we have the same attributes that Colton has, maybe we will go to Heaven also. Men of Galilee’ â€Å"The same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven. † After Jesus died on the cross, it is said that his spirit ascended upwards into Heaven. This supports Colton’s claim that Jesus has no wings. Colton specifically mentioned to his father that Jesus would move up and down and the Angels would fly. This quote directly supports that God has no wings, he ascends and descends. This quote is significant because it supports Colton’s claims and shows that he is not lying about what he saw in Heaven. Todd Burpo- â€Å"You might as well tell God what you think, He already knows it anyways. † This quote is saying that you should be true to God. No matter what he will respond to your call. Even if you are angry at him, let out your anger. When Todd was angry at God and questioned his faith, he let out his anger; even then his prayer was heard. If something is bothering you, then tell God. You deserve to tell God what you think because â€Å"God loves the children. † God loves all of his children. VII) â€Å"Heaven is for real† raises numerous issues dealing with religion, raises numerous questions, and even challenges other religions. This book specifically mentions that you have to be a Christian and you have to give Jesus your soul in order to go to Heaven. So this means that Devout Christians are the only ones going to Heaven? What about other religions? What happens to the people who believe in God, but who do not have a â€Å"Christ† in their religion? â€Å"Heaven is for real† raises questions about which religion to truly follow. If this book is true, then does this mean that people should change their religion and faith to Christianity? What does this mean for me, a born Hindu follower? Even though there are a lot of questions, there also are a lot of answers. The book gives a general to detailed description of what heaven looks like. â€Å"Heaven is for real† also supports the afterlife. Countless, numerous people often wonder if there is or there is not an afterlife. Well for a person like that, this book answers your question. As for the whole story, are people ready to believe Colton? The story has touched my heart and I believe Colton. I just don’t know if I should change my faith. Hyperplasia (noun)- The enlargement of a tissue or organ due to multiply of reproduction cells. Precursor (noun)- A substance that forms before, pre-stage. Lumpectomy (noun)- A surgical operation that is used to remove enlarge tissue or cells. Upchuck (verb)- To eject the contents of the stomach through the mouth. Definition and Examples of Visual Metaphors A visual metaphor is the representation of a person, place, thing, or idea by means of a visual image that suggests a particular association or point of similarity. Its also known as  pictorial metaphor and analogical juxtaposition. Use of Visual Metaphor in Modern Advertising Modern advertising relies heavily on visual metaphors. For example, in a magazine ad for the banking firm Morgan Stanley, a man is pictured bungee jumping off a cliff. Two words serve to explain this visual metaphor: a dotted line from the jumpers head points to the word You; another line from the end of the bungee cord points to Us. The metaphorical message- of safety and security provided in times of risk- is conveyed through a single dramatic image. (Note that this ad ran a few years before the subprime mortgage crisis of 2007-2009.) Examples and Observations Studies of visual metaphors  used for rhetorical purposes generally concentrate on advertising. A familiar example is the technique of juxtaposing a picture of a sports car . . . with the image of a panther, suggesting that the product has comparable qualities of speed, power, and endurance. A variation on this common technique is to merge elements of the car and the wild animal, creating a composite image...In an ad for Canadian Furs, a female model wearing a fur coat is posed and made up in a way that is slightly suggestive of a wild animal. To leave little doubt as to the intended meaning of the visual metaphor (or simply to reinforce the message), the advertiser has superimposed the phrase get wild over her image. Routledge, 2005) A Framework for Analysis In Pictorial Metaphor in Advertising (1996) . . ., [Charles] Forceville sets out a theoretical framework for the analysis of pictorial metaphor.. A pictorial, or visual, metaphor occurs when one visual element (tenor/target) is compared to another visual element (vehicle/source) which belongs to a different category or frame of meaning. To exemplify this, Forceville (1996, pp. 127-35) provides the example of an advert seen on a British billboard to publicize the use of the London underground. The picture features a parking meter (tenor/target) framed as the head of a dead creature whose body is shaped as the fleshless spinal column of a human being (vehicle/source). In this example, the vehicle visually transfers, or maps, the meaning of dying or dead (because of lack of food) onto the parking meter, resulting in the metaphor PARKING METER IS A DYING FEATURE (Forceville, 1996, p. 131). Considering that the advert wants to promote public transport, having lots of parking meters wastin g away in the streets of London can only be a positive thing for underground users and the underground system itself. Continuum, 2010) Visual Metaphor in an Ad for Absolut Vodka [The] subcategory of visual metaphor involving some violation of physical reality is a very common convention in advertising...An Absolut Vodka ad, labeled ABSOLUT ATTRACTION, shows a martini glass next to a bottle of Absolut; the glass is bent in the direction of the bottle, as if being drawn toward it by some invisible force... Sage, 1997) Image and Text: Interpreting Visual Metaphors [W]e have noticed a decrease in the amount of anchoring copy used in visual metaphor ads...We theorize that, over time, advertisers have perceived that consumers are growing more competent in understanding and interpreting visual metaphor in ads. Cambridge University Press, 2001) Visual Metaphor in Films One of our most important tools as filmmakers is visual metaphor, which is the ability of images to convey a meaning in addition to their straightforward reality. Think of it as reading between the lines visually. . . . A couple of examples: in Memento, the extended flashback (which moves forward in time) is shown in black-and-white and the present (which moves backward in time) is told in color. Essentially, it is two parts of the same story with one part moving forwards and the other part told backward. At the point in time where they intersect, the black-and-white slowly changes to color. Differences between men and women in employement The word gender refers to the socio-cultural definition of man and woman, it is a way through which society distinguish men and woman. The distinction between sex and gender was introduced to deal with the general tendency to attribute womens subordination to their anatomy. There are multiple reasons to understand the current increase in the proportion of male versus female in population across Asia. Firstly sex ratios in India have been recorded since the early 1980.the Indian scenario of female discrimination is extremely complex in view of Indias social and economic diversity: the interplay of cultural and economic factors, along with the impact of policy initiative has produced a heterogeneous situation .This complexity offers ways to better understand the mechanisms at work and to inform the policy debate on the struggle against gender discrimination. In our society it is seen that characteristics, roles and status accorded to women and men in society are determined by sex, that they are natural and therefore not changeable. Gender is seen closely related to the roles and behaviour assigned to women and men based on their sexual differences. When a child is born our families and society starts the process of gendering. If son is taken birth than it is celebrated and the birth of a daughter filled with pain; sons are showered with love, respect, better food and proper health care. Boys are encouraged to be tough and outgoing; girls are encouraged to be homebound and shy. All these differences are gender differences and they are created by society. Gender inequality is therefore a form of inequality which is distinct from other forms of economic and social inequalities. It dwells not only outside the household but also centrally within it. It stems not only from pre-existing differences in economic endowments between women and men but also from pre-existing gendered social norms and social perceptions. Gender inequality affects the development goals which reduce the economic growth. It hampers the overall well being because blocking women from participation in social, political and economic activities can adversely affect the whole society. THE Indian experience IN India it represents a clear picture about education and employment opportunities for girls. Our culture, social factor still prevents girls from getting education and employment. In rural area the girls child is made to perform household and Agriculture, cleaning the house, preparing food, and they have to perform many tasks like that. In village physical safety of girls especially when they travel a long distance to school and fear of sexual harassment are the reason s that impedes girls` education. In the urban area, girls have some opportunities in comparison to rural area but there is also some difference in the opportunities that girls get for education and employment .Through the figure for girls would still be low as compared to boys. In employment opportunities too, women in India today have stormed all male bastions. Be it piloting aircraft, heading multi-national corporations, holding top bureaucratic positions, leading industrial houses, making a mark as photographers, filmmakers, chefs, engineers and even as train and lorry drivers, women have made it to all hitherto considered male bastions in India. However, this is not reason enough for cheer. For the number of girls and women who have been left out of education and employment opportunities, still far outweighs those who have got them. Gender segration in employment This term refer to the occupational unequal distribution of men and woman in the occupational structure sometime also called occupational segration by sex. These are two type vertical segration; describe the clustering of man at the top of occupation hierarchies and of woman at the bottom, horizontal segregation. Many developing countries including India have displayed gender inequality in education, employment and health. It is common to find girls and women suffering from high mortality rates. There are vast differences in education level of two sexes. India has witnessed gender inequality from its early history due to its socio-economic and religious practices that resulted in a wide gap between the position of men and women in the society. Womans salary in India, less than a third of men According to the survey done by world Economic Forum (WEF) it show that a big gender gap in corporate India in the employment of women from the entry level to the top management of companies. As reported by Financial Chronicle the survey which is based on the response of 60 of the 100 best employers in India, showed that women employees held only 10 percent of the senior management positions in two-thirds of the surveyed companies. None of the companies had women chief executive officers (CEOs) and almost 40 percent of the respondents had only 10 percent women work force. The survey show that only 4% of the companies surveyed monitor salary gab. Nevertheless 84% of the companies dont believe that there is a wage gap while the remaining 12% do not track wage gap at all. India stand 114th among 134 countries in the WEFs India gender gap review 2009. It has closed 93 percent of its health gender gap, ranking 134th out of as many economies. It stands at 121st position in education gap with 84 percent and is at 127th place with 41 percent of economic participation gap. Besides, it is ranked 24th with 27 percent of the political empowerment gender gap, according to the study. Causes of gender discrimination 1. Linda Mid-American Journal of Business; Spring(2004) study that only 3 percent of the most highly compensated executives are female, that the position are held by disproportionately by men, and that female executive are likely to clustered in particular industry group. 4. Simon Appleton (1977) suggested that expanding female education will improve gender equity which was the outcome of the study done in Uganda. The study focused on the involvement of women in politics in South Africa and Uganda. He also found a relationship between the importance of gender equity to economic growth and traced womens civil society in Uganda was given importance. 5. Song, Appleton and Knight, 2006 study that boys are more attend school in China than girls, is the work of scholars who worked to find the causes of the same. Boys are more likely than girls to attend school in rural China. There is evidence that gender equity is a luxury good; the demand for female schooling is more income elastic than that for male schooling. 6. Another study by Shellenbarger to find out the nature of work undertaken or assigned also differs on the gender ground. Boys tend to be given more physical tasks like lawn mowing and fixing things, `while girls are stuck with housecleaning and doing the dishes. Even parents who fight for gender equity in their own marriages find themselves splitting their childrens tasks along traditional gender lines. 7. The chairman and the CEO of PepsiCo, Indra Nooyi said that there was a need to educate the male population about women empowerment, besides educating the female population. If you do not treat the women well, society will not progress. 8. THE METHODOLOGY OF GENDER AND EMPLOYMENT OBJECTIVES:- 1. For low income women seeking employment, one of the most critical problems is a lack of adequate skills. Therefore, the provision of skill training can meet an important practical gender need. Edgar Allan Poe; A Man of Secrecy   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 as Edgar Poe. He was the second son to Elizabeth Arnold Poe and David Poe. Both parents were actors, and shortly after Poe’s birth, his father deserted his family around 1810. Edgar became an orphan before the age of three years, when his mother died on December 8, 1811 in Richmond, Virginia at the age of twenty-four years. His father died at the age of twenty-seven years old. After his mother’s death, the childless couple, John and Frances Allan, took in Poe; his paternal grandparents took in brother William Henry; and foster parents cared for sister Rosalie. Allan was a strict and unemotional tobacco merchant and his wife was overindulgent. Poe was educated by the Allan’s aid, in private academies, excelling in Latin, in writing verse and declamation. However, regardless of his education, he was looked down upon by the upper class of society, perhaps because Poe was never legally adopted by the Al lan’s, nonetheless he was regarded as an outsider by the Richmond elite. However, being the child of former actor’s could have also added to his reputation of not fitting in with Richmond’s culture at that time. The loss of his mother at an early age definitely affected Poe, â€Å"The angels, whispering to one another, Can find, among their burning terms of love, None so devotional as that of ‘Mother’† (To My Mother). In Tamerlane, he not only wrote about his father, but he wrote about his mother too. He had more respect for his mother than he did for his father. The Ziggurat art is a monument which has been preserved up to date because it was constructed using very strong solid mud-bricks that were covered with a thick cover of burned bricks (Architecturecourses.org). The ziggurats structures were constructed to serve a multiple of cultural and religious practices in this region of Mesopotamia; in fact, the Ziggurat served as an administrative centre for the entire city due to its location (Architecturecourses.org). In addition to this, it also served as a religious place and it has been commonly known that the moon god known as nanna was dwelling here. For this reason, in the building there was an altar and shrine known as the bedchamber which was meant for the gods and was strictly placed at the ziggurat’s pinnacle (Architecturecourses.org). The Khafre’s pyramid is among the most prominent and the second largest pyramid of the ancient Egypt (Bayuk). This monu ment which is also known as the pyramid of Chefren, was constructed by pharaoh’s son who was known as Khafre between the years 2532-2558 B.C and was a constructed using beautiful limestone block making the monument to be very attractive (Bayuk). This pyramid has been preserved up to date and it has a wonderful design that makes it to look very unique in the way the top has been twisted. On the other hand, this pyramid also has an outstanding feature that makes it to be very perceptible; the color and texture of its top plus the unique design makes the pyramid to be very outstanding. The structure of the pyramid is horizontal in shape while its structure is made of very big stones at the bottom and small one at the top (Bayuk). The Khafre’s pyramid was built to be a multi-purpose and one of the major functions that it used to serve was that, it was used as a burial chamber (Bayuk). Inside the pyramid there are many compartments with each being designed to serve a differ ent function; towards the west on one of the passage sides, there is a burial chamber which was very distinct due to its outlook; it was also constructed using limestone beams in a rectangular shape measuring about 14m by 5m in size (Bayuk). On the other hand, inside the pyramids of the original structure, there were many other chambers within that served as stores. Mainly, there was one chamber close to the burial hall that was used for storage of burial equipment and other related materials while on one side also, there was another store but which was rather different from the others (Bayuk). Ricardo`s major work was The Principles of Political Economy and Taxation (1817). This book presented most of his important theories, especially those concerned with the determination of wage and value. For the problem of wages he proposed the iron law of wages, according to which wages tend to stabilize around the subsistence level. According to his labour theory of value, Ricardo stated that the value of almost any good was, essentially, a function of the labour needed to produce it.
